We now have the scientific proof and data to support art therapy as an effective tool for improving mental health by decreasing anxiety and stress, alleviating depression, and providing an outlet for self-expression that helps people of all ages heal from trauma.
This week we are joined by an art therapy client who shares her struggle with childhood trauma. While traditional “talk” therapy did have a positive impact on her life, it has been art therapy – specifically painting – which has given her the space and means to truly heal.
“Now I have a life worth living,” she explains as she details her journey from hitting rock bottom seven years ago to today where her life is full of love, family, and purpose.
Sibel Ozer, LPC, BCPC, ATR-BC, also joins us to explain the value of art therapy. Whether it is a soldier working to overcome PTSD or a person living with Alzheimer’s, art therapy can engage our minds differently than traditional therapy with dramatic results.
Art has been an outlet for self-expression since the dawn of time. Today’s art therapy movement works to channel the healing power of art into helping those who have experienced trauma.
