Julie Halpert and her husband, co-founders of Garrett’s Space, are dedicated to squashing the stigma surrounding suicide in order to help grieving families, like theirs, avoid having to suffer in silence. As Ms. Halpert shares, the loss of a child to suicide is truly devastating. It is only through awareness and compassion without judgment that we can combat the heart-breaking, steady increase in suicides.
Scott Teichmer, Suicide Prevention Facilitator at Calhoun County Community Mental Health Authority, explains how the QPR method, much like CPR, can be applied to help save a person’s life. QPR involves questioning directly and empathetically listening to someone who may be in danger of taking their own life, and then helping them get in contact with the appropriate professionals. He implores us all to use this straightforward method to help alleviate the escalating crisis of suicides among young people in our country.
