Eating disorders are among the most misunderstood mental health issues – and one of the most prominent, with millions of people of all genders, ages, and backgrounds suffering from them. The stress, chaos, and uncertainty of the global pandemic, along with the isolation associated with lockdowns, have led to skyrocketing cases of eating disorders worldwide. Now, perhaps more than ever, it is critical for us all to better understand this complicated set of illnesses.
In this episode, Anna Kilar, a survivor of anorexia, bravely opens up about her experience with eating disorders and explains that they are about more than weight alone. “When you have an eating disorder you think you have full control over your eating and your behavior, but in reality, the eating disorder has complete control over you.” Anna shares.
“Eating disorders are not choices. They are not something you choose to engage in, which I think is a big stigma. People think it’s just for attention, when really, it’s a mental illness and you don’t choose to go down this path,” Anna tells us.
Join us as we work to further the conversation surrounding eating disorders, and stop the stigma that all too often impedes the mental wellbeing of those involved.
