“We developed the program with two goals. The first goal was to give children the skills they need to manage their mental health independently. The second goal was to focus on education.” Judge Edward Joseph details the motivation for establishing the Juvenile Mental Health Court of Wayne County, and explains why it’s so important on this episode.
Kids need – and deserve – confidence and a feeling of self-worth. “Before the program I felt worthless. I felt like I didn’t have anything going for me.” Samantha Wesley was headed down a dangerous path as a young teen. Fortunately, her mother got her the support she needed through the Juvenile Mental Health Court of Wayne County.
“When I graduated from the program, it was the first real thing that I actually accomplished in my life, and it made me feel very proud of myself.” The Juvenile Mental Health Court of Wayne County provided the resources and support that Samantha needed to go from an at-risk teen to a successful young adult.
“If you’re a parent, or if you’re a child or a teen, don’t minimize your mental health needs. Focus on them…and reach out for help.” Judge Joseph explains the importance of addressing mental health issues on this show – and shares the resources that are there to help.
