Parents don’t have to understand everything their child is going through; they just have to try their best – always. “Right off the bat I said, ‘We’ll figure this out’, but I didn’t know what it meant.” Roz Keith was scared and confused when her child told her that he was transgender. However, she did not hesitate to offer him the support he needed.
Words matter. Discovering the correct term to describe a person’s sexual or gender identification can help them better communicate – and understand, themselves, – who they truly are. “He said the term ‘transgender’ and I was like, ‘Oh! That’s me!’” Hunter felt the concept of being transgender long before he knew the word for it. However, having the right vocabulary was essential in helping him fully embrace who he is.
Now is the time to stand together to support those who identify as LGBTQ, as well as their families and loved ones. “It’s a coming out process for the entire family.” Hunter credits his mother’s support and devotion for helping him as he navigated what it truly means to be transgender.
