To most people, the word addiction brings to mind drugs and alcohol. But addiction to gambling, though less known, is just as epidemic.
In this episode, Michael Mooney, a recovering gambling addict turned psychologist who has gone on to treat others like himself, bravely shares his story of an agonizing spiral into gambling addiction – and his hard-fought climb out of it. “It was as if I had veins bulging out of my head…the obsession, the compulsion; this was addiction at its worst,” Mr. Mooney explains.
Richard Riggs, Addiction Therapist, also weighs in on the conditions that can lead to gambling addiction. He reveals the sad irony that many gambling addicts gamble in hopes of making their lives better…but only make them worse in the process. He sheds light on why those addicted to gambling need help and support, rather than judgement and stigma.
The COVID-19 pandemic and related lockdowns have bred loneliness, boredom, and financial stress – which, in turn, have led to a significant spike in online gambling. Now, we are working to stop the stigma surrounding addiction, and get help for those who need it.
