Nearly one-eighth of all Americans experience some form of disability. When we look beyond disability to appreciate the potential within, we all benefit.
Having a disability shouldn’t mean having a disadvantage in the workplace. Brian Calley, former Michigan Lt. Governor and current President of the Small Business Association of Michigan, and Jenny Brown, President and CEO of Dutton Farm, share how adults with disabilities bring great value to their jobs. In fact, companies that are hiring people with disabilities are enjoying lower rates of turnover and higher rates of productivity. “A person with a disability has to be innovative. They have to be creative. They have to persevere. They have to be hardworking just to do the things every day that you and I take for granted,” Brian Calley explains.
Dutton Farm, a non-profit offering programs in adult education, community involvement, art, and workforce development, is proof of the extraordinary accomplishments and contributions that can be made by people with a range of disabilities. Its CEO, Jenny Brown, gives us insight into how Dutton Farm helps those with disabilities overcome their limitations – and the stigma that they unfairly face.
Now is the time to recognize the potential within persons with disabilities and to help foster a work environment that welcomes, embraces, and fully utilizes their talents.
