“Sometimes I feel like I’m at war with myself. I feel like a prisoner trapped in my own skin.”
Bethany Boik had many demons and many false diagnoses that affected nearly every moment of her life. She suffered through a traumatic childhood and grappled with confusing, overwhelming symptoms for years before finally being diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder.
In this episode, Ms. Boik shares the daily struggle of living with such a complex and often misunderstood mental health issue. She explains how she’s learned to cope with the effects of Schizoaffective Disorder and its stigma and offers advice for others, particularly adolescents, who are learning to live with the disorder.
Dr. David Connell also joins us to explain more about what Schizoaffective Disorder actually is and why it can be so difficult to diagnose and properly treat. He explains the most common symptoms of this mental health issue and how those affected by it can overcome its grip.
As a successful author and mental health advocate, Ms. Boik gives hope that it is possible to lead a happy, fulfilling life even in the face of Schizoaffective Disorder or other struggles with mental health.
This episode is one of MI Healthy Mind’s most viewed and response-generating episodes and we are excited to share it this week. Bethany’s story of overcoming extreme adversity continues to inspire our viewers and resonate with others experiencing hardship.
