MI Healthy Mind is a 30-minute TV talk show with a focus on all things Health and Wellness, particularly in the mental health and behavioral sectors. Seasoned hosts, Elizabeth Atkins and Michael Hunter explore a vast range of subjects (addiction,
depression, bipolar, autism etc) with valuable insights and lively conversation from popular entertainers, experts, athletes, and other newsmakers. But most important, MI Healthy Mind showcases real people, “the heroes” who have
overcome and triumphed over their mental health issues. In the wake of incredible loss, or adversity, these people found a way to turn personal tragedy into hope.
“All the world is full of suffering. It is also full of overcoming.” — Helen Keller
MI Healthy Mind: Surviving Suicide, The Loved Ones Left Behind
The stigma of suicide will not deter Kevin Fischer from speaking out about his son’s passing, his grief, or the mental health issues that contributed to the tragedy.
Too often suicide is made a taboo subject to discuss. Instead of delving into its causes and direct – and indirect – effects, it is swept under the rug. However, Kevin Fischer is choosing to share the story and pain of his son’s death by suicide in order to help others recognize the warning signs and to let those who have lost loved ones to suicide know that they are not alone.
Mr. Fischer speaks about suicide as both the Director of the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Michigan and as a father still reeling from the shock and pain of losing his own son to suicide. His candid and honest interview is a plea to those considering harming themselves to seek help from the services NAMI of Michigan provides or from elsewhere.
“Every day now I have to wonder when he stepped off that chair with that strap around his neck, was there one moment where he wanted to turn back and say, ‘Dad, I need you now’, and I wasn’t there?” The death of Mr. Fischer’s son by suicide left him with so many overwhelming feelings of grief, guilt, and loss that he began considering suicide, himself. Now, he shares how he has learned to heal.
“Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States, but is the ONLY cause of death that’s actually been increasing in the last 15 years.” Dr. Brian Ahmedani, Director of Psychiatry Research of the Henry Ford Health System, also weighs in to help explain that suicide is a more common and more pressing national issue than you may have thought.
